Graph Databases (Neo4j), Fraud Detection (Panama Papers) and Python

The event is hosted by Cerved. It will focus on different data science applications that are made possible using graph databases and in particular Neo4j.

The Neo4j talk will be english, while the talks by Cerved and Larus will be in italian. Slides will be presented in english for all of the 3 talks. At the end of the talks we will move to a nearby place for a networking aperitivo with food and drinks.

Brief introduction to Cerved data, the role of data scientist in Cerved and how a data scientist can take advantage from graph database.


Stefano Gatti: Born in 1970, has been involved for more than 15 years in several big data and technologies driven projects in leading business information companies like Lince and Cerved. He is very fond of agile metodologies, trying to apply them at all organizational levels. In last years he is strongly engaged in facilitating in Cerved the spread of innovation and the taking advantage from the new big and smart data technologies especially from a business usage perspective. datatelling, open innovation, partnership with smart actors of worldwide data driven innovation ecosystem are his actual mantra. Nunzio Pellegrino: Data Scientist in Cerved, as part of Innovation team, with focus on extract value from data and resolve problems with the latest technologies available. I’ve a degree in Statistics with background in Machine Learning. I’ve being worked primarily in Data Integration and Business Intelligence projects for 3 years. In this moment, I’m product owner of a web application based on GraphDB and involved in Italian Open Data projects. I’m a R enthusiastic, Python practitioner and fascinated of graph ecosystem.

Involving 2.6 TB of data and 11.5 million documents, The Panama Papers were the biggest leak and the largest cross-border investigation in journalism history. This massive trove of documents exposed how the offshore economy works like never before. Watch this webinar to learn how graph databases were key in revealing the main names connected to companies in tax havens, including 140 politicians in more than 50 countries.


Stefan has been in Technical Pre-sales roles for more than 15 years, working for companies such as Tandem, Compaq, and Portal Software with specific emphasis on database technologies. More recently, he took on lead Pre-Sales and Consulting roles in the DACH region for TimesTen (in-memory relational database). After TimesTen was acquired by Oracle (2006), Stefan grew to lead the entire European Oracle ISV/OEM Pre-Sales team as the Director of Sales Consulting.

In this talk I am going to show some Neo4j use cases together with Python, from NLP analysis of academic publications topics to mobility analysis with Twitter. Finally I will present some tips to do “quick-and-dirty” and advanced analysis taking data out from Neo4j directly to Pandas, leading data analysis package for Pythonistas. 


Fabio is a Ph.D. Civil Transportation Engineer, in love with all things related to mobility, data and network dynamics. He’s currently working at LARUS, the #1 Italian Partner with Neo4j, as Neo4j Certified Consultant and Trainer. Graphs and networks integrate, support and enjoy his working life, from consulting activities on transportation networks analysis, to research projects with data coming from social networks, cities and transportation systems. Also behind the organization of the DataBeers Venezia, he loves listening to music, travelling by train and eating cheese and red wine.
